After more than eight years of legal disputes, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have finalized their divorce.
According to Jolie’s lawyer, James Simon of Hersh Mannis, the settlement was signed on December 30, bringing closure to one aspect of their prolonged legal battle.
“More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt. She and the children left all of the properties they had shared with Mr. Pitt, and since that time, she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family. This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago. Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over.
Jolie initially filed for divorce in 2016, citing irreconcilable differences. Once regarded as one of Hollywood’s most glamorous couples, Jolie and Pitt were together for about a decade and had six children before marrying in 2014.
Their divorce proceedings were drawn out due to a series of legal battles, including a contentious custody trial, fallout from a 2016 incident aboard a private plane, and disputes over Jolie’s sale of her stake in Château Miraval, a French winery they once co-owned and the location of their wedding.
The 2016 plane incident emerged in detail in August 2022, when a heavily redacted FBI report revealed that Jolie accused Pitt of physical and verbal abuse during a flight from France to the United States. Pitt was never arrested or charged, according to an FBI statement at the time.
Jolie filed her divorce petition shortly after the flight, requesting sole physical custody of their six children—Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Knox and Vivienne—who were aged 8 to 15 at the time. Pitt retained joint legal custody.
In 2019, their marriage was dissolved in status only, though custody and financial disputes remained unresolved. In 2020, Jolie told Vogue India that separating from Pitt was the right decision for the “wellbeing” of her family, emphasizing her continued focus on their healing.
The ongoing legal battle over Château Miraval began after Jolie sold her stake in the property in 2021. Pitt has since alleged the sale was unlawful, and the dispute remains unresolved.
With the divorce settlement finalized, Jolie and Pitt have closed a significant chapter in their legal history, though some disputes linger.
