Coco Gauff Shines in Win Over Iga Świątek as Team USA Secures United Cup Title

Coco Gauff delivered a commanding 6-4, 6-4 victory over world No. 2 Iga Świątek, propelling the United States to its second United Cup title just a week before the Australian Open.

Gauff, ranked world No. 3, showcased her growing dominance in the rivalry, securing her second consecutive win over Świątek after previously managing only one victory in their first 12 encounters.

“I have the belief that I’m one of the best players in the world and, when I play good tennis, I’m hard to beat,” Gauff said, per the WTA. “I think I played some great tennis. I’m glad I was able to get a point for Team USA. It’s great to win a team event.”

The United States clinched the title with Taylor Fritz’s hard-fought victory over Hubert Hurkacz, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(4), in the second match of the final, securing a 2-0 triumph over Poland.

A Statement Win for Gauff

Gauff’s showdown with Świątek was the highlight of the event, offering nearly two hours of thrilling tennis. Her flawless performance throughout the tournament in both singles and doubles has bolstered her confidence heading into the Australian Open, where she aims to improve on last year’s semifinal finish.

Świątek, who reached the Australian Open semifinals in 2022, appeared to struggle physically during the match, requiring a medical timeout late in the second set for a strapped left thigh.

Sabalenka Dominates in Brisbane

Elsewhere, world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka claimed the Brisbane International title, fighting back from a set down to defeat world No. 107 Polina Kudermetova 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Sabalenka is preparing to defend her Australian Open crown, aiming to become the first woman to win three consecutive titles in Melbourne since Martina Hingis (1997-1999).

“Mentally, physically, I’ll be ready to go at the Australian Open,” Sabalenka said, per the WTA. “I love playing there and fighting for my dream.”

Injury Setback for Osaka

Naomi Osaka reached her first final since 2022 at the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand, but was forced to retire due to an abdominal injury after winning the first set 6-4 against Clara Tauson.

Osaka, a four-time grand slam champion, returned to tennis in 2024 after prioritizing her mental health and becoming a mother. Despite the setback, her performance throughout the tournament showed promise as she prepares for the Australian Open.

“I’m really sorry about how it ended, but I hope you enjoyed the tennis we played,” Osaka said. “I’m just really grateful to be here.”

With standout performances from Gauff, Sabalenka, and Osaka, the stage is set for an exciting Australian Open as the tennis season heats up.
