Demi Moore celebrated a career milestone on Sunday, winning her first Golden Globe for best female actor in a film — musical or comedy — for her performance in The Substance.
“I really wasn’t expecting that. I’m just in shock right now,” the 62-year-old actress said as she accepted the award. “I’ve been doing this a long time, like over 45 years, and this is the first time I’ve ever won anything as an actor. I’m just so humbled and so grateful.”
Reflecting on her journey, Moore recalled a conversation with a movie producer 30 years ago who dismissed her as a “popcorn actress.”
“At that time, I made that mean that this wasn’t something that I was allowed to have,” she said. “I believed that, and it corroded me over time to the point where I thought maybe I was complete, maybe I’d done what I was supposed to do.”
Moore shared that the script for The Substance arrived during a low point in her life, revitalizing her passion. “I had this magical, bold, courageous, out-of-the-box, absolutely bonkers script come across my desk, and the universe told me, ‘You’re not done,’” she said.
Her family and friends celebrated her victory, sharing a video of their enthusiastic reaction on Instagram with the caption, “She did it!”
A Feminist Fable
The Substance, directed by French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat, is a feminist cautionary tale that examines the dangers of obsessively chasing youth.
Moore closed her speech with a powerful message from the film: “In those moments when we don’t think we’re smart enough, pretty enough, skinny enough, or successful enough… Just know, you will never be enough, but you can know the value of your worth if you just put down the measuring stick.”
The win marks a significant moment in Moore’s illustrious career, reminding audiences of her enduring talent and resilience.
