Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, passed away peacefully at his home in Plains, Georgia, on December 29, 2024. He was 100 years old.

Born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Carter graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946 and served as a Navy officer until 1953. After leaving the military, he returned to manage his family’s peanut farming business, where his dedication to community and public service began to take shape.

Carter’s political career started in the Georgia State Senate, where he served from 1963 to 1967. He later became Georgia’s governor from 1971 to 1975, gaining national recognition for his progressive stance on racial equality. In 1976, Carter won the presidency, serving from 1977 to 1981.

As president, Carter championed human rights and achieved notable foreign policy successes, including brokering the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel. However, his administration faced significant challenges, such as the Iran hostage crisis and domestic economic struggles, which overshadowed parts of his presidency.

After leaving office, Carter devoted his life to humanitarian work. He founded the Carter Center in 1982, focusing on global health, conflict resolution, and promoting democracy. His efforts earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. He was also deeply involved in Habitat for Humanity, personally helping to build homes for families in need.

Tributes have poured in from around the globe, with President Joe Biden calling Carter “a man of unshakable faith and integrity.” Former President Barack Obama lauded his commitment to peace, and Donald Trump recognized his contributions to the betterment of American lives.

Carter is survived by his four children, numerous grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Public memorials will be held in Atlanta and Washington, D.C., with a private burial in Plains, Georgia.

Jimmy Carter’s century-long life exemplified humility, service, and a relentless pursuit of justice, leaving a legacy that will endure for generations.
