Golden Globes 2024: A Night of Glamour, and Heartfelt Moments

The 82nd Golden Globe Awards kicked off Hollywood’s award season Sunday night with a blend of glamour, humor, and touching moments. Celebrating films and TV shows that delved into themes of aging, immigration, survival, and acceptance, the night maintained its signature lighthearted and celebratory tone.

Nikki Glaser’s Memorable Hosting Debut

Nikki Glaser, the first standalone female host of the Golden Globes, brought her signature humor to the evening. Opening the show with a playful jab at the popular weight-loss drug Ozempic, Glaser kept the audience laughing with quips about Timothée Chalamet’s facial hair and Selena Gomez’s fiancé Benny Blanco.

One standout moment was her comedic attempt to create a musical mashup titled “Pope-ular,” combining themes from Wicked and a papal conclave, complete with a pope hat and Glinda’s wand. Later, Glaser hilariously tallied acceptance speech shoutouts, noting a lack of love for “God, creator of the universe,” and remarking, “No surprise in this Godless town.”

Family Takes Center Stage

Family connections added heart to the evening, with several nominees bringing parents as their dates. Zoe Saldana, Ariana Grande, and Margaret Qualley all arrived with their loved ones, while Adrien Brody delivered an emotional speech thanking his immigrant parents, paralleling their sacrifices to those of his character in Brutalist.

Fernanda Torres, the surprise winner for best female actor in a drama for I’m Still Here, dedicated her win to her mother, legendary Brazilian actress Fernanda Montenegro, sharing a poignant reflection on the endurance of art during challenging times.

Moving Acceptance Speeches

The night was filled with touching moments, including first-time winner Demi Moore’s tearful acceptance for her role in The Substance. Reflecting on her decades-long career, Moore shared her journey of overcoming self-doubt and finding renewed purpose through the bold script.

Colin Farrell brought humor to the stage, crediting his makeup artist and craft services team for his win for The Penguin, quipping, “No one to thank on this one—I did it all by myself.”

Director Jon Chu of Wicked highlighted the power of cinema to connect and promote understanding while accepting the award for cinematic and box office achievement.

Golden Glamour on the Red Carpet

The Globes shone brightly with stars donning golden-hued gowns. Host Glaser dazzled in a custom Prabal Gurung dress, while Cate Blanchett, Ariana Grande, Mindy Kaling, and Elle Fanning all opted for stunning gold ensembles.

Meanwhile, Angelina Jolie sparkled in a silver beaded Alexander McQueen creation, and Demi Moore impressed in an iridescent champagne gown. Pops of bold color also lit up the carpet, with Dakota Fanning turning heads in a strapless red Dolce & Gabbana gown and Ali Wong, Sheryl Lee Ralph, and Emma Stone rocking shades of ruby and burgundy.
